Under Qatar’s current tax law, salaries and wages are not subject to personal income tax in Qatar, although another country may still tax you under its own residency or citizenship rules.
A Qatar residence permit is not the same as tax residence; Qatar applies tests including a permanent home or more than 183 days of presence, while another country may still consider you tax-resident.
Qatar generally taxes Qatar-source income, so genuine foreign-source income is not taxed solely because you live in Qatar, although the source country or another country of tax residence may tax it.
Income from work performed or a business managed from Qatar may be Qatar-source even when the client, contract or bank account is located abroad.
The general corporate tax rate is 10% of taxable Qatar-source profit, with the final treatment depending on ownership, activity, exemptions and licensing platform.
A 5% withholding tax may apply to certain royalties, interest, commissions and Qatar-related services paid to non-residents without a Qatar permanent establishment, subject to any applicable tax treaty.
Gains from Qatar real estate or Qatar-connected business assets may be taxable, while certain personal disposals not connected to a taxable business may be exempt.
Qatar has not applied VAT, but excise tax applies to specified goods and customs duties may apply to imports.
Free zones and the Qatar Financial Centre have separate tax and licensing rules, and their incentives apply only when the company and its activities meet the relevant conditions.
A tax treaty may help resolve dual tax residence or reduce withholding tax, but treaty benefits depend on eligibility and supporting documents.
Qatar participates in international tax-information exchange, including the Common Reporting Standard, so relevant financial-account information may be reported to another country.
